"When I saw this little animal while on a hike in the woods, he was at a great disadvantage. He was in his white "ermine" coat to match the snow in winter, and it was an open winter--an old expression for a season not closed in by snow. It was a study in contrast and the green mosses and browns of the stump were as beautiful as the ermine. I knew I couldn't portray either less than the other. It was one of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen, and for his sake, I hope that the snow would arrive soon for his needed protective coloring and hunting camouflage."
